OSI Group is an American based leading multinational food provider and one of the largest food providers in the world. About 20,000 employees work for the group in 65 facilities across 17 countries. OSI Group started off in Illinois where a large German immigration presence had big impacts in the area. Otto Kolschowsky was one of these German immigrants that helped make Chicago, Illinois a large city of industry. Immigrants worked both in the city and went past the city to set up farms in the plains. In 1909, Otto set up a small retail meat market/butcher shop to serve the citizens of Chicago. In the next decade the business expanded and entered he wholesale side of the industry while also opening another operations site in the Chicago suburb Maywood.
Otto and Sons was the rebranded name of the company. For years, the company continued to a successful smaller meat producer in the Chicago area. The biggest break for Otto and Sons happened when the sons of Otto, Arthur and Harry, reached an agreement with Ray Kroc to supply meat for McDonalds. This would change the fate of Otto and Sons forever. The company continued to be successful throughout the years working with McDonalds and eventually changed its’ name to OSI Industries. OSI Group would grow over the years as it reached more agreements with food chains. The group also expanded globally to be he large global food provider that it is today.
OSI Group has expanded greatly in the European and Asian food markets recently, and has seen large growth because of it. There is now an OSI Group office in Germany. The group has also grown exponentially within the United States opening multiple facilities and offices across America. Over the 100 + years of the group, massive growth has occurred and it’s truly amazing to see how a small meat shop started in Chicago by a German immigrant has turned into one of the world’s most powerful and leading food producers. The group is now focused on maintaining their large global food production and influence across the world, as well as exploring ways of effective environmental safety and sustainability.
